Writing a wedding invitation feels easy until you actually sit down to do it. Every word carries weight - too formal and it feels cold, too casual and it seems careless. Get the tone right and your guests feel genuinely invited; get it wrong and they wonder whether they actually need to come.
This collection covers 60 ready-to-use examples across every style and ceremony type. Copy exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and adjust names, dates, and details. All examples are written in English; we've included transliteration guidance for Hindi phrases where relevant.
Every wedding invitation needs five things
Names of the couple (and hosts if applicable) - date and day of the week - time (use "doors open" vs "ceremony begins" if there's a gap) - venue with city - dress code if it's not obvious. Everything else is optional.
1. Traditional & Formal Wording
Traditional wording follows a set structure: the hosts (parents or the couple) request the honour of your presence, followed by ceremony details. Use "honour" (British spelling) for the most formal tone, and spell out the time in words rather than numerals.

Tips for Customizing Any Wording
1. Decide who is the "host" first
The host is whoever is paying for or organizing the event. If both families are contributing, list both. If the couple is self-hosting, write it from their perspective. There's no right or wrong - just be consistent throughout the card.
2. Write the time in the format your guests recognize
In India, "7 PM" is universally understood. "Seven o'clock in the evening" is appropriate only for very formal printed invitations. For digital invitations shared on WhatsApp or email, keep it simple: "6:30 PM" is perfect.
3. Dress code - say it clearly or don't say it at all
Vague instructions like "semi-formal" confuse more than they help. Be specific: "Indian ethnic preferred", "festive wear", "no white please", or "beach casual". If your venue or timing makes the dress code obvious (beach at sunset, ballroom in the evening), you can skip it entirely.
4. RSVP deadlines are not optional
Always include an RSVP deadline, especially for catered events. Without one, guests assume you don't need a response. Set the deadline 2-3 weeks before the event (4-6 weeks for destination weddings). Be specific: "Please RSVP by 20th June" is better than "RSVP soon".
5. Digital invitations need the same information as printed ones
When sharing via WhatsApp or a shareable link, guests often screenshot just the text. Make sure all five essentials are visible: names, date, time, venue, and city. If your digital invitation includes an "Add to Calendar" button, guests can skip writing it down entirely - it's saved automatically.
